Attendance Improvement Service (formerly Education Welfare Service)

Service Description

Attendance Improvement Service

The Local Education Authority discharges its legal obligation with regard to school attendance through the Attendance Improvement Service (AIS). It seeks to do this in partnership both with families and with schools in order to ensure that young people receive the education to which they are entitled.

In addition, the AIS has core duties relating to;

  • Child employment & performances
  • Children with medical needs accessing education
  • Children Missing Education
  • Youth Justice Strategy

Attendance Improvement Officers (AIOs)

AIO's work closely with schools, families and students to identify and assist children with school related problems including truancy. AIO's role is to support families to ensure their child/children attend as much of their education provision.

What happens if I remove my child from their school

All parents have a legal responsibility to send their child/children to school. If you remove your child from school, you must ensure that you make other arrangements for your child to attend their education.
If you remove your child from school, you must speak to your child's school immediately to discuss arrangements.
The consequences of your child not attending education may result in legal proceeding against you.

Contacting your child's AIO

To discuss your child's attendance at school or to speak to the relevant Attendance Improvement officer, please contact the Attendance Improvement Service.
