Schools enlist green food waste fighting machines

Schools across Leicestershire have enlisted the help of some green food fighting machines to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
A total of 165 schools now have Green Cone food digesters installed.
Supplied by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils, the Green Cones are being used by children to dispose of break-time waste such as banana skins, apple cores and sandwich crusts.
The Green Cones sit in the ground and turn food waste into water, carbon dioxide and nutrients which are absorbed back into the ground. They are also available for residents to buy at a bargain price of just £7.50.
One school which has recently had a Green Cone food digester installed is Brookside Primary in Oadby.
Head teacher Lynn Bruce said: The Green Cone is a key part of our school's recycling programme.
"We are pleased to have found an alternative way to dispose of food waste and are glad we are able to do something towards helping the environment."
Guy Jackson, chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: I am delighted to see so many schools are encouraging children to use the Green Cones to dispose of their waste.
They are not only helping to reduce the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill, but are also educating our young people about how they can do their bit for the environment.”
County residents can buy green cones for £7.50*. For more information on Green Cones, and other reduced rate food digesters, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/food_waste_digesters
