Celebration to help young women into work

Getting a foot on the career ladder is the theme for a special celebration involving over 100 young women at South Leicestershire College.
The 14 - 19 year olds will get a taste of different professions at the event organised by Leicestershire County Council to mark global event International Women's Day.
The Army, Police and Prince's Trust are among up to 20 organisations taking part in the day this Saturday (10th March).
The young women will get a feel for different jobs, as well as training and apprenticeships available, by taking part in taster sessions spanning a variety of careers including construction, painting and decorating, cookery, health, social care, sport and more.
International Women's Day is held annually on 8th March and was first celebrated in 1911. It honours the work of the Suffragettes who fought for the right to vote and the end to discrimination, and also commemorates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
Jackie Dickinson, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, is kicking off the event with a motivational speech.
She said: “Helping our young people get a foot on the career ladder is vital and this event is a great opportunity for them to find out more about training and sample a number of professions.
"We have some amazing young women here in Leicestershire and the day enables them to celebrate their, and other women’s, achievements.”
Gretta Tharratt, Manager, Safeguarding, Learning Support and Equality at SLC is delighted to be hosting the event and said: “We welcome the opportunity to invite young women into our college to showcase our facilities and learner experiences while inspiring their futures.”
Information on domestic violence and teenage pregancy support will also be available at the event.
