Former Rugby star goes back to school to officially open it!

Staff and pupils at Long Field School in Melton Mowbray are celebrating their £5 million new state-of-the-art sports centre and school refurbishment.  The new look school was officially opened on 16th April by the former England Rugby and Leicester Tigers star Matt Hampson, who was also a pupil at the school.
Matt Hampson suffered a serious neck injury in a scrum incident whilst training for the England under 21s in March 2005 which left him paralysed.
The new sports centre at Long Field School, which has been named the Hampson Centre, after the star, comprises:
  • An excellent new sports hall with changing rooms and viewing area.  These will be used to deliver BTEC and GCSE PE.
  • A Year 7 base with up-to-date classrooms and excellent ICT facilities which will have flexible walls that can be moved to suit different activities.  There will also be an open space for assemblies, demonstrations and performances with a parents' café.
  • A sports science classroom equipped with a range of exercise equipment with viewing gallery looking over the sports hall.
The sports centre is just part of the £5 million development at the school.  The existing school building has also been greatly improved and now has:
  • An exciting new two-floor Learning Resource Centre, with full library facilities, new work stations and a specialist teaching room for media studies.
  • A new extension dedicated to design and technology, including a special IT hub for pupils to develop their design skills.
  • An inclusion area for pupils that need extra support, including dedicated space for teaching small groups.
  • An extension to the school's dining room including a cyber-café area.
  • A new area for staff development and training.
Long Field is one of the partner schools in the County Council’s reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir.  This aims to raise standards of education and achievement, building on current school excellence.
As part of the reorganisation, Long Field will retain pupils until they finish their GCSEs.
Roger Wilson, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, said:
"This is a major milestone for Long Field School.  The new sports centre is fantastic and the refurbishment has completely modernised and changed the look and feel of the school. I know that everyone has been eagerly awaiting for the work to be completed.  The new facilities at the school are of a very high standard and will help it to deliver an excellent standard of education to pupils in this the 21st Century."
Rob Garrett, Principal at Long Field School, said:
"We look forward to welcoming visitors to Long Field to celebrate this important event with us. We are delighted Matt has agreed to open the new buildings and look forward to using the facilities to improve the opportunities for all our students."
