Narborough Road South Environmental Improvements

The Scheme

Over the past few years, financial contributions towards improving the road network have been negotiated by Leicestershire County Council from the developers of new commercial buildings in the Meridian and Fosse Park areas.
A total of £1.5m of this money has been allocated for environmental improvements on the highway within the residential area adjacent to and along Narborough Road South. Leicestershire County Council has developed some initial ideas for these improvements. However, before any decisions are taken, we are seeking residents’ views on these ideas, and on any other highway / streetscape issues that this money could tackle.

Why change?

View of Narborough Road South
The Narborough Road South corridor (see adjacent picture) has a harsh urban feel about it and is lacking in green space, particularly when compared with Narborough Road further into the City. The existing wire mesh fence is functional; however it is rusting in places making it unsightly. The proposed measures aim to improve the streetscape for both residents and visitors to the area and will enhance this important gateway route into Leicester City Centre.

Proposals

Introduction of Green Spaces

We are proposing to improve the general environment of Narborough Road South by introducing landscaped green spaces. We aim to create the space required to achieve this by moving the kerb lines, on the service roads creating ‘build-outs’ where possible. These build-outs will provide suitable areas for shrubs and trees to be planted, bringing vegetation and colour to the area. More information on the build outs and their possible locations will be shown at the exhibition or can be obtained through the contact details at the bottom of this page.
An artists impression of the landscaping proposals can be seen in the adjacent picture.

New Fencing

The existing fence plays an important role in the safety of Narborough Road South both for pedestrians and drivers, by separating the service road users from through traffic on the dual carriageway. We are proposing to replace the existing fence and have looked into some potential alternatives. We would like your views on the different types of fencing we believe could be used. These can be viewed at the exhibition or further details can be obtained through the contact details at the bottom of this page.

What else is happening in this area?

So far the developer contributions have helped towards a number of highway improvements including:
There are also a number of further improvements planned for the area including:

What happens next?

Following the mobile exhibition on the 13th, 14th and 15th of November 2008 and the public consultation ending on the 5th January 2009.
The next steps for these proposals are:
  • Evaluation of the consultation results and the preparation of a consultation report.
  • If there is support for these proposals construction work could start in early 2010.
Views expressed during the public consultation period will help us with our design.
