Local Sustainable Transport Fund
Choose how you move – smarter travel for business
Leicestershire County Council is to bid for up to £5 million to revitalise local economies and tackle climate change.
In June 2011, an Expression of Interest (pdf) to the Department for Transport (DfT) for up to £5 million from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) was submitted. The final bid, ‘Choose how you move – smarter travel for business’, must be submitted by 24th February 2012, with the successful bids announced in May 2012, and is likely to include measures such as:
- Offering grants to businesses to help increase sustainable travel
- Cycle and walking network development e.g. cycle ways & improved signage
- General marketing and promotion of sustainable forms of transport e.g. car sharing, travel phone apps, smarter ticketing
- Adult cycling courses.
By incorporating the above into Leicestershire’s bid, the benefits to both the public and businesses will be:
- To aid economic growth and development
- A reduction in congestion on the roads
- Increased vitality of local shops and businesses
- Improved air quality and reduction in carbon emissions
- Health and fitness benefits associated with increased walking and cycling.
Analysis of the evidence from our third Local Transport Plan (LTP3) has identified our areas of focus as being in and around Loughborough and Coalville.
The DfT announced the establishment of the LSTF in January 2011. Local authorities outside of London have the option to bid for a share of the £560 million pot of money, aimed at building strong local economies and addressing the urgent challenges of climate change.
