The Lord-Lieutenant’s Award for Young People 2013

2013 saw the 7th year of the awards established by the Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Gretton. This award scheme seeks to indentify, celebrate and reward the very best examples of achievement by young people in Leicester and Leicestershire
The Lord-Lieutenant’s Award for Young People focuses on five key themes and nominations will need to demonstrate that the young person has made a contribution to society which meets the criteria set out below :
Nominations were sought in the following categories:
Stand up and be counted! ... Young Braveheart of the Year
- To be given to an individual who has:overcome personal barriers to achieve success,
- made a stand against bullying, racism etc,
- demonstrated a life-saving act of bravery.
Show that you care! ... Young Volunteer of the Year
To be given to an individual who has:
- enhanced their local community or environment
- cared for a neighbour or relative in need
- helped to run a community or sports based club or society
Speak up, speak out! ... Young Voice of the Year
To be given to an individual who has:
- promoted the views of young people
- represented young people in decision making processes
- used social or web based media to support young people
Push the boundaries! … Young Scientist of the Year
To be given to an individual who has:
- demonstrated a real passion for the sciences
- engineered a mechanical or electrical solution to a problem
- used ICT to create an innovative application or graphic based program
Express yourself! ... Young Artist of the Year
To be given to a young person who has demonstrated real skill, innovation, and expression in
- visual arts
- expressive arts
- literature
- music
Eligibility criteria for the award
The award is open to young people aged 13-19 living in Leicester or Leicestershire. The young person can be nominated by other young people, their school, parent/carer or any other agency.The award recognises and rewards young people who have demonstrated exceptional volunteering, leadership, commitment or determination. There will be a separate award for each category. From the winners of these categories one person will be announced as the Lord-Lieutenant's Young Person of the Year. Nominators are asked to suggest an appropriate prize to the value of £500. It will not be possible for the young person to receive the award in cash. The suggested prize should be beneficial to the nominee's interest, studies, or current or future employment, such as computer hardware and software, or specialist tools and equipment.

2012’ award winner, Sophie Bingham said: “I was thrilled to become the Lord-Lieutenant's Young Person of the Year. With so many deserving nominees I was amazed to win, but it is a great honour. There are many young peole who deserve to be recognised so do please nominate them for the 2013 Award. I wouldn't have received this recognition if it were not for my nominator.
