Work has began on new Barwell Community Centre
Building work begins on a much needed new community facility next week with the turning of the first sod of earth to signal the start of the George Ward Centre in Barwell.
When it opens in Spring 2010 the ultra modern £2 George Ward Centre will boast youth facilities, a sports hall, meeting rooms, a community café, a learning centre along with the relocated Barwell library.
Through the George Ward Community project local people’s needs and aspirations have fed into thedevelopment of the new centre.
Local teenagers have played an instrumental part in designing the youth wing and in line with their views, it will include a mural wall, plasma screen, table football and games consoles.
The development will also be the new home to Barwell Library and include a focus on learning for all ages.
Turning the first sod took place on the 5th October with David Parsons, CBE Leader of Leicestershire County Council along with members of the George Ward Community Project, the construction company Galliford Try and Leicestershire County Council libraries
In 1948 local business man and benefactor, George Ward, gifted the The Cedars, his house and its grounds in Barwell to Leicestershire County Council for the community. Recently this property fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2002. Leicestershire County Council undertook a “land swap” with the local primary school as the site of the George Ward Centre.
