Apply to join the Access Forum

People who enjoy walking and riding in the countryside, or are interested in exploring their neighbourhoods are encouraged to apply to join the Leicestershire Local Access Forum.
There was a recruitment promotion in late 2011 and early 2012. However, applications are still welcome and will be retained for whenever there are any further vacancies on the forum.
More information about what forum membership involves is included below.

Why apply?

  • Make a positive contribution by helping watch over - and shape the future of – open access land, and public footpaths, bridleways, byways, and cycle trails in Leicestershire, working alongside and advising the County Council and other local authorities and public agencies.
  • Represent a specific field or area of interest. Access Forums are independent official bodies set-up by government to represent the diverse views of different groups of people concerned with access to the countryside and exploring urban areas.
  • Share your experience as a walker, runner, climber, horse-rider, cyclist, motor vehicle user, farmer, landowner; as a public transport user; as a person involved in the tourist industry, environmental, conservation, disabled or disadvantaged groups; or as someone concerned about health issues.
  • Bring your distinct perspective to enable the forum to reflect the whole spectrum of people who live and work in Leicestershire. Members with varied views and wider experience are wanted, whether or not they are land managers or committed rights of way users.
  • Give your time to have your say as forum members are unpaid volunteers who meet four times a year to debate topical rural and urban access issues, discuss policy and planning proposals, and raise matters of concern.

What you need to apply:

To request printed copies of any of these documents email accessforum@leics.gov.uk or phone 0116 305 7655.

How to apply:

Full guidance on applying is on page 8 of the Membership Application Pack. In summary you should:
  • Read all the Application Pack and the Annual Report to understand the Forum's role and it's current concerns.
  • Look at the terms of reference and the roles and responsibilities of both Forum members and the County Council.
  • If you have any questions, make contact or attend one of the Forum meetings as an observer.
  • Send a completed application form which may be handwritten or typed (which is preferable).
  • Be available to attend an informal interview with the Forum Secretary.
Leicestershire has a network of more than 3000 kms of definitive paths. There are also permissive paths, Country Parks and other opportunities to walk cycle and ride. All of this needs to be managed and promoted.
