Information Management

INTRODUCTION

In order to improve our delivery of services to the citizens of Leicestershire, it is essential that the information we hold is properly managed and kept secure and up to date. A considerable amount of work is currently being carried out to address this requirement. As the work develops, we will be adding to this page to keep you, the public, informed of what we are doing.

OPENNESS AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION

Keeping people informed of what we are doing is one of the key aspects of openness under which Leicestershire County Council operates. By providing access to as much of the information we hold as possible, we can make it easier for you to access the services which we provide. It will also help you to understand the Council processes and decisions which directly affect you and encourage you to participate in these processes.

There are four key areas of legislation which give individuals specific rights of access to information. These are:

Data Protection

Open Padlock

This legislation, which applies to all organisations, not just public authorities, gives anyone the right of access to information held about themselves. It is also designed to ensure that all personal data held (both electronically and in manual filing systems) is properly looked after and not disclosed to third parties inappropriately.

Freedom of Information

This legislation came fully into force on 1st January 2005 and gives anyone the right of access to the majority of non-personal information which any public authority holds.

Environmental Information Regulations

the earth from space

These Regulations came into force in 2004 and provide access to any information about the natural environment and how our plans and policies might affect it.

Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations (PSI)

These Regulations came into force on 1st July 2005 and are intended to help ensure the effective use of information produced in the Public Sector.

OTHER AREAS OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT WORK

We are currently developing new methods of storing, managing and accessing information. This will include providing user-friendly facilities to view related information about specific places and areas by using such things as interactive maps. We are also looking to improve the way we interact with the general public (our “customers”) and how better management of customer information can assist with this. More information on these and other cutting-edge developments will appear on these pages in due course.
