INTRODUCTION
The
Structure Plan provides a framework for the development and use of land in the Plan Area for the period
1991 to 2011. It will guide the detailed policies and proposals of Local Plans and decisions on planning
applications.
The Plan comprises:
Each
chapter puts forward a number of policies which will shape the pattern of development in the Plan Area
up to 2011. The policies are accompanied by explanatory text which indicates interpretation and implementation
of each policy.
In summary, we aim to preserve the area's unique historic,
cultural and natural assets, and create an environment that allows people to enjoy social and economic
well-being. In other words we are trying to achieve sustainable development. For example, the Plan will
ensure:
- people will be able to reach shops and other facilities more easily
- the need for homes and jobs is met without unnecessary damage to the environment
- development is of a high quality design
- the best parts of the environment are improved and protected
- other valued features are replaced if lost through development
- the quality of air, water and land is improved by good management
- people need to travel less, especially by car
