Disability Equality Scheme

Welcome to our Disability Equality Scheme 2006 – 2009. We are delighted to be given the opportunity to demonstrate what we will be doing to improve the lives of disabled people throughout Leicestershire.
The Disability Discrimination Act amended in 2005 gives the County Council ‘general’ and ‘specific’ duties to promote disability equality.
The new general duty means that we must, in carrying out our functions, (what we do) have due regard to:
  • promoting equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people;
  • eliminating discrimination which is unlawful under the Act;
  • eliminating harassment of disabled people that is related to their disabilities;
  • promoting positive attitudes towards disabled people;
  • encouraging participation by disabled people in public life;
  • taking steps to take account of disabled people’s disabilities even where this involves treating disabled people more favourably than other people.
Under the specific duties most public authorities including the County Council have to produce a Disability Equality Scheme. The Scheme helps us to meet the general duties mentioned above.
Guidance for producing the Scheme has been issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission
http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/Pages/default.aspx
The Scheme can be accessed in a variety of formats by clicking on the links below:
Schools are required to have a Disability Equality Scheme (Secondary Schools by December 2006 and Primary Schools and Special Schools by December 2007). Guidance on producing a Disability Equality Scheme is available on the SEN team section of the School Improvement and Performance Service website.
Under the Disability Equality Scheme the council will also publish a range of information relating to employment and services.
