Disability Equality SchemeReview of the SchemeLeicestershire County Council has reviewed their Disability Equality Scheme which ran from (2006-9). This was considered by the Disabled Workers Group at their conference in December 2009 and by the Equalities Board in February 2010. (A copy of the final report and action plan is available below under the Annual Reports heading).
We are also currently updating our Equality and Diversity Strategy involving disabled people in its design. The disability equality duties and proposed disability outcomes will be included within the new Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategy.
Previous Disablity Equality Scheme (2006-2009)Welcome to our Disability Equality Scheme 2006 – 2009. We are delighted to be given the opportunity to demonstrate what we will be doing to improve the lives of disabled people throughout Leicestershire.
The Disability Discrimination Act amended in 2005 gives the County Council ‘general’ and ‘specific’ duties to promote disability equality.
The new general duty means that we must, in carrying out our functions, (what we do) have due regard to:
Under the specific duties most public authorities including the County Council have to produce a Disability Equality Scheme. The Scheme helps us to meet the general duties mentioned above.
Guidance for producing the Scheme has been issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission
The Scheme can be accessed in a variety of formats by clicking on the links below:
Schools are required to have a Disability Equality Scheme (Secondary Schools by December 2006 and Primary Schools and Special Schools by December 2007). Guidance on producing a Disability Equality Scheme is available on the SEN team section of the School Improvement and Performance Service website.
Under the Disability Equality Scheme the council will also publish a range of information relating to employment and services.
