This report does not include appendices. (The appendices have detailed district maps at Output Area Level). If you would like a hard copy of the report then please email : rradburn@leics.gov.uk.
Profiles for all of Leicestershire's 53 Electoral Divisions summarising all the main Census topics are now available in PDF format
Profiles for all of Leicestershire's 204 parishes summarising all the main Census topics are now available in PDF format.
Profiles for all of Leicestershire's 133 wards summarising all the main Census topics are now available in PDF format.
An Excel workbook has been created containing data from all the Key Statistics tables that allows for the creation of a bar chart based on the users' ward selection. The workbook allows for the easy visual comparison of wards against the Leicestershire average, and is a useful tool in performing exploratory data analysis on the Key Statistics tables.
(Please note: the Excel workbook contains macros)

Census Area Statistics (CAS) provide the most local detailed results from the Census, down to Output Areas, and were the largest set to be released from the Census.

The Standard Tables at ward area level were released on 31st July, adding much local detail to the National Report published on 7th May. They provide many relationships between Census topics. or further details on these tables.

The National report for England and Wales contains 145 statistical tables covering a range of topics. It is a uniquely valuable source which fills out the picture of the country as a whole and each local authority given by the Key Statistics released on 13 February 2003. In particular, it shows many relationships between Census topics, for example the links between age, social group, and health.
Standard TablesThese tables provide a cross-tabulation of two or more Census variables. For further details on these tables please contact Robert Radburn - 0116 265 6891 rradburn@leics.gov.uk These tables bring together a range of results on a particular population, such as dependent children and are available by clicking the link below:
The release of the Key Statistics Tables on 13th February 2003 by the Office of National Statistics presented users with the first opportunity to see a summary of the complete results of the Census 2001 Census.
The twenty four Key Statistics tables cover all the main Census topics, consisting of approximately 375 counts of percentages and counts. They are in effect the 'executive summary' of the Census and would be the starting point for anyone using the Census to get an overview of an area.
These tables are presently available only at local authority district, county, unitary, regional and national level but will be released later in the spring at ward and output area level.
The table below provides links to the relevant Key Statistics tables. These provide mainly percentage figures comparing the Leicestershire districts and county area with the East Midlands and England:

Comparability with the Final Results of the 2001 Census
Subsequent results from the 2001 Census may differ very slightly from those that have been released for local authority districts on 30th September.
Age Groups in Leicestershire
In Leicestershire the size of the 50-54 age group is above the UK average. With 48,179 people, the age range 35-39 has the highest absolute total. The size of the 0-4 age group in Leicestershire is below the UK average. With the exception of Charnwood district, the size of the 20-29 age group across the County is below the UK average. Oadby and Wigston district has a higher proportion of the 15-19 age group than the UK average.
Ratio of Men to Women
The UK has 800,000 fewer young men than previously thought. The Office for National Statistics has also put overestimation in the mid-year estimates down to fewer young men.
This is especially true within the 20-24 age group as well as the key 20-39 age group, where 75 per cent of local government districts in England and Wales have more females than males in the 2001 results, including Leicestershire albeit by three people.
However, across all districts in the County the number of men in the 20-24 age group still outnumber women. This is similar to the East Midlands figures but not for England and Wales where the number of women outnumber men.
The ratio of men to females in Leicestershire is 0.98, which is higher than the figure for the East Midlands at 0.96 and the UK at 0.95
Ageing Population
In the past 50 years the population of the UK has aged considerably. The proportion of the population aged over-60 in 2001 in Leicestershire is 21 per cent of the total population. This is similar to both the East Midlands and United Kingdom average. The ageing of the population is most evident from the increase in people aged 85 and over. For Leicestershire this represents 1.8% of the total population, and is similar to both the regional and national average.
Population Change Midyear Estimates 1981 to Census 2001
Due to problems with comparability with the 1991 Census ONS have compared population change with the annual mid year estimates, which uses a similar ‘population definition’ to the 2001 Census.
In the past 20 years the population of Leicestershire rose by 67,000 from 542,600 in 1981 to 609,600 in 2001. This is a 12.3% increase. There were gains in population in all the districts with the biggest percentage increases in Harborough (24.6%), Blaby (16.9%) and Hinckley & Bosworth (13.7%). The largest absolute increase in was in Charnwood, where the population rose by 15,100 (9.5%) to 153,500 in 2001.
Comparability with the results of the 1991 CensusComparisons with results from the 1991 Census will be affected by changes in geographic boundaries of local authorities; changes in definitions of the resident population; and adjustments to the results from the 2001 Census for estimated under enumeration. In the past, the total population given by the Census was the raw count, reflecting a response rate of 98%. Census 2001 results are the first to represent the entire population. Therefore, care must be taken when interpreting intercensal population change.
Care must be taken when interpreting population change, as there has been changes in definitions between 1991 and 2001, and the population counts have been adjusted to account for under enumeration.
2001 Census and Midyear EstimatesComparing the midyear estimates for 2000 (MYE 2000) with the population count from the 2001 Census, it suggests that the total population for the UK is approximately a million people less than previous estimates. However within Leicestershire; Blaby, Hinckley & Bosworth and Oadby & Wigston districts the 2001 Census population is above the midyear estimates for 2000.

The Mid-2001 Population estimates are being published by the Office of National Statistics on 10th October 2002. They will be based on the results of the 2001 Census, but will allow for births, deaths and migration between Census Day on 29th April 2001 and 30th June 2001, which the midyear estimates relate to.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have published a 2001 Census Output Prospectus which details the scope and phasing in of the Census results.
The table below summarises the final output timetable:

Origin/Destination statistics still to be announced
In a break with previous censuses, 2001 data will be delivered in an unrestricted and user friendly way. The emphasis is a shift from charging to access, usefulness and internet access.
Through the Census Area Project, funded by an Invest to Save Budget with contributions from partners including the LGA, no charge will be made for accessing census results through the ONS Neighbourhood Statistics (NeSS) website.
This does not mean all census results will be made freely available, “material charges” will be made for providing CD-ROM’s of data , any paper copies of tables and customised output.
ONS has a legal obligation to ensure that all possible steps are taken to prevent the, “inadvertent disclosure of information about identifiable individuals and households”.
Small counts in all tables will be adjusted. In addition there will be swapping of records in the output database and minimum thresholds on the numbers of people and households in any area before the release of output. These are 40 households and 100 person for the Census Area Statistics, and 400 households and 1,000 people for Standard Tables.
With the first results from the 2001 Census less than six months away, the Research and Information Team at Leicestershire County Council will be producing a regular series of newsletters and fact sheets to keep local Census users up to date on the progress, timetable and availability of results. Please circulate the newsletters to anyone you feel will be interested in the Census results. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of the 2001 Census or wish to be included to the mailing list please do not hesitate to contact me: rradburn@leics.gov.uk.
The Team holds detailed data from the 1991 Census of Population for Leicestershire as well as details from previous Censuses. Key results from the 1991 Census of Population on Local Districts are available below. For more detailed results at ward or parish level please contact the Research and Information Team.
