Output Area Deprivation in Leicestershire

The Research & Information team have investigated a number of measures of deprivation to highlight the poorest areas in the county at the smallest geographical level. A report has been produced using 2001 Census data to identify areas of multiple deprivation based on the new census small area geography of Output Areas (OAs). The 2001 Census gave 1,993 OAs in Leicestershire which, on average, have a population of 300 people.
The report focuses on:
a. Identifying deprived areas by seven themes
  • Income
  • Child income
  • Health
  • Employment
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Access to service
b. Identifying multiple deprivation in areas
  • Identifying the most deprived OAs in Leicestershire using all the themes.
The report found that areas in the 10 percent most deprived in Leicestershire are concentrated around the urban areas of Coalville, Loughborough, Melton, Wigston and Hinckley. The majority of the 10 percent most deprived OAs are classed as areas with a high prevalence of flats or terraced housing which is publicly rented. The report is available in PDF format from the link below along with the data from the seven themes for each Output Area in the county
