Lord Lieutenant's Land Army and Timber Corps Reception
|
Local women praised for wartime dutySpecial celebration evenings are taking place in honour of the hard work, dedication and commitment of the Women’s Land Army and Timber Corps during the Second World War. Similar receptions are being held across the country following the issue of a special land Army and Timber Corps commemorative badge by the Government.
The Land Army and Timber Corps served on front-line Britain. Many women volunteered to serve our country and were posted near or far to wherever they were most needed.
Much of the work they undertook was physically demanding and involved looking after animals, ploughing, sowing and harvesting crops, controlling pests and cutting timber for use in Britain’s coal mines. This physical effort had to be sustained over long hours – up to 48 hours a week in the winter, and 50 hours a week in summer. A shortage of equipment meant that much of this was work was done by using traditional hand methods.
Their reward for this hard work was knowing that they were providing an essential service to their country in a time of war. They kept food on the tables and the coal mines productive.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer, Lady Gretton, said:
“Our nation owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Women’s Land Army and Timber Corps who, during the dark days of the war, provided food and energy for the nation. Their contribution was as important as that of anyone else who served their country.
“During their service great friendships were formed and the reception was a great way for some of the ladies to rekindle these friendships and to make new ones. It also provided an opportunity for them to share memories and experiences”
Land Army and Timber Corps commemorative badges and certificates are being issued by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs. For details on how to apply please visit
