Civic and Ceremonial Affairs
Leicestershire’s First Citizen
There has been a Chairman of the County Council since its inception in 1889. The current, and 37th, Chairman is Jackie Dickinson. The role of the Chairman is largely ceremonial but there is a constitutional role within the political organisation of the County Council, although it is quite distinct from the political leadership of the County Council.
The Chairman also has a broader role in terms of engaging with the people of Leicestershire and fulfilling this remit occupies much of the Civic Calendar. As ‘First Citizen’ of Leicestershire, the Chairman plays a key role in promoting and enhancing the civic life of the County.
