Residential Care HomesHow do I Choose a Care Home?Details are available in ‘A Directory of Care Homes in Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland’. The Directory can be obtained from your local Social Care Office or by contacting Adult Social Care Services on 0116 305 7404.
The following websites enable you to search for Care Homes:
There is a wide variety of homes ranging in size and in the types of services they offer.
The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) inspects and reports on care services and councils to improve social care. You can also contact them for a list of homes by phoning the national helpline on 0845 015 0120, or email CSCI enquiries@csci.gsi.gov.uk.
Things to Consider when Choosing a Care HomeOnce you have found a selection of homes that you think might suit you, phone the home and ask for a copy of their brochure. You should ask to speak to the manager of the home and arrange to visit them. Visiting the home will give you a chance to meet staff and residents, and talk to them about the home.
It is crucial that you are happy in the home you choose to live in. When you visit a home it is probably a good idea to take a relative or friend with you so that you can compare impressions. You are making an important decision and you should not feel that you are being nosy or awkward when you are asking questions. Take your time when you visit and take a list of possible questions or a checklist if possible.
