Residential Care Homes

Types of Care Homes

There are various accommodation and care services available:
  • housing with a warden or other support services
  • accommodation known as 'Extra Care', in which more intensive support can be delivered, but where somebody still maintains a tenancy or is an owner-occupier
  • a residential home provided by a private home owner or the County Council
  • for people who require continual access to a nurse, this can be provided in private residential homes with nursing care
  • hospice care for terminally ill people
Nursing home care provides nursing care by qualified nurses, or under their supervision. It is beneficial for people who are ill, injured or frail.
Leicestershire County Council have been consulting with the public on proposals to develop more supported accommodation for older people as alternatives to residential care; read more about the consultation here Developing Supported Accommodation for Older People Consultation.

Inspections, Registration and Complaints about Care Homes

The organisation responsible for the registration and inspection of care homes since in April 2004 is the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI).
We can provide information and guidance about making a complaint if you are concerned about the care that you, a friend or a relative are receiving in a residential home. Contact us for more information.
