Services for People affected by Stroke

Accessing Services

People affected by stroke
If you feel that you or someone you know would benefit from services following a stroke please contact your local Social Care office to arrange for an assessment, or contact the Stroke Association for further advice and information.
Carers
If you are providing care for someone affected by stroke and feel you might benefit from services to help you as a carer. Please contact your local office to discuss a carer’s assessment or contact the Stroke Association for further advice and information.

Services

Social Care Services
Social Care services may be able to assist you with personal care, meals, shopping, social activities and minor aids and adaptations to assist you with everyday tasks.  All services and equipment provided are subject to an assessment of eligibility and may incur a charge dependent on your financial circumstances.
Health Services
If you or someone you know requires assistance with physiotherapy, communication problems, continence issues or psychological issues related to stroke you should contact your GP in the first instance.
Social Activities
If you or someone you know is socially isolated as a result of stroke you might like to contact the Stroke Association for information on local stroke groups to attend.  If you are not able to access a stroke group due to your disability please contact your local office to discuss an assessment for assistance with arranging social activities.
Communication Services
If you or someone you know is struggling with communication following a stroke you could contact Connect or Speakability.  Both groups can offer information and advice and signpost to relevant support groups.
Working Age Stroke Support Groups
  • Different Strokes is a charity founded by younger stroke survivors for young stroke survivors.  It can provide useful information, advice and access to counselling services for younger people affected by stroke.

  • 4ward Strokes is a local support group for working age people who have experienced a stroke.  They are part of the national network of Stroke Association Support Groups.  They can help with issues such as parenting, employment, pension planning and coping with stroke.  They meet monthly in Leicester and arrange regular social activities suggested by the group.  For more information contact the Stroke Association.
The Confederation of Indian Organisations in Leicester, ciostrokeproject will provide information, advice (including on prevention) and support to stroke survivors and their carers in the South Asian Communities of Leicester and Leicestershire. (also, to groups settings within the South Asian Communities in Leicestershire). In addition they organise Stroke Meeting Groups for stroke survivors and their carers'.
Family and Carer Support Service
Family and Carer Support Workers are funded by Leicestershire County Council via the Stroke Association.  They are hospital based but will visit new stroke survivors in hospital and in the community.  They can provide emotional support, useful information on stroke prevention and coping skills, liaise with professional and voluntary agencies on your behalf and assist in applying for appropriate benefits and grants.  For more information on their role please contact the Stroke Association.
