Services for Visually Impaired People

Vista provides services on behalf of Leicestershire County Council. Vista is the main provider of services to nearly 6000 registered blind and partially sighted people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
If you feel that you, or someone you know, would benefit from these services, contact Social Care Services to arrange an assessment or contact Vista for further advice and information. Vista provides the following services on our behalf:
  • Rehabilitation and Equipment
  • Advice, Information and Signposting
  • Guide Communicator
  • Intervener Service

Accessing Services

Rehabilitation and Equipment Service

The Rehabilitation and Equipment service provides assessments, and individual packages of rehabilitation and support, for Service Users with mobility, personal care, access, communication and other difficulties caused by their visual impairment.
County residents can access this service through:
  • a consultant ophthalmologist,
  • a Social Work Team,
  • a high street optician, GP or other health professional
or by referring themselves by contacting Vista directly

Advice, Information and Signposting Service

The Advice, Information and Signposting Service is aimed at people with visual impairments, and organisations and carers who support people with a visual impairment, when they are attending the Ophthalmic Outpatients Department/Ophthalmic Wards at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (Leicester Royal Infirmary). The service is accessed by contacting the Duty Desk at Vista.

Guide Communicator Service and Intervener Service

These are services for people with Dual Sensory Impairment and provides one to one support, assisting people to access community facilities, such as going shopping, social and recreational activities, or in dealing with correspondence or financial matters. It can also assist people to work with other statutory services, or to arrange interpretation support for medical appointments, benefit or housing appointments etc.
People access this Service following assessment by the Adult Social Care Service.

Statutory Register for people with Visual Impairments

Vista also maintains the Statutory Register for people with Visual Impairments (including Dual Sensory Impairments). This receives referrals from consultant ophthalmologists and supports people to access a range of support services
