Our Vision

Leicestershire County Council Adult Social Care Services offer lots of different services. Some services are provided by our staff, some are provided by different organisations who we pay for them to provide the service. We aim to make all our services the best and to make sure that they are right for the person using them, no matter what their needs are.
Our Vision for the Learning Disability Services tells people what we will provide now and in the future. We also have to make sure we spend our money well.

The Learning Disability Service says people with Learning Disabilities have a right to choose what is best for them and should have a say about how they want to live their lives.
We think that the Government’s Plan “Valuing People”, which was written in March 2001, is very important in helping to improve  the lives of people with learning disabilities, their parents, carers and families
Valuing People says that services for people with learning disabilities should work in a Person Centred way to:
  • promote people's rights
  • support their independence
  • respect choice
  • support their inclusion in their own community.
The Government has also published a new paper called Valuing People Now.
Valuing People Now. tells us about more, important things that we need to do for people with Learning Disabilities.
The Learning Disability Service is also looking at Personalisation. This means increasing the choice of services available,  and giving people more control over the money available to support them
Anyone who needs support to live in the community should have more choice and control over their support. Words like Direct Payments and Individual Budgets describe ways that people can have the money to buy the services that they need.
equal opportunities
Valuing People says that people with learning disabilities should:-
  • have exactly the same rights as everyone else
  • be given a real chance to be independent if that is what they want
  • have a real say about what they need and be given a choice
  • be part of their local communities. This is called integration

We try to make sure that adults with learning disabilities have:-
  • Choice and control about how they want to live their life and be able to do what they want to do
  • Good Lives and be able to get a job and go to college or do meaningful activities during the day, evenings and at weekends
  • Better Health The National Health Service (The NHS) must get better at including people with learning disabilities in everything that they do
  • Better housing to live in, with a choice of where they want to live
We will work with people with learning disabilities, their families, local communities and other agencies to:

  • get better at communicating and listening to all people with learning disabilities.
