The Research Governance Framework

What do Social Care Agencies need to do to meet RGF?

In May 2004 the Department of Health (DH) published “The Research Governance Framework for health and Social Care – Implementation Plan for Social Care”.  This outlined the actions that social care agencies need to take to meet the requirements of RGF.
From December 2005 Social Care Services must have:
  • Systems to deal with applications from people wanting to carry out research
  • Checks to ensure that all agreed research has a sponsor
  • Systems to record study details, adverse occurrences, complaints, etc.
  • Procedures for providing information to service users, carers and staff regarding completed research
  • Made staff aware of their responsibilities under RGF
  • Systems for the safe handling and storage of data
  • A person or group to assess plans for research studies
  • Systems to ensure there is a documented research plan
  • Systems to ensure that research has been subject to scientific and ethical review.
