Children 'Looked After'
|
Children and Young People 'Looked After' (in Care)There maybe situations where children can no longer live at home with their families. This could be for a number of reasons – illness; a family breakdown or break-up; or parents or carers who are unable to provide the right sort of care and protection. When this happens, we find accommodation for the child and they become ‘looked after’ by the County Council. They may go and live with friends or relatives, in a foster home or a ‘community’ (children’s) home for a few days or weeks or longer if need be.
Whilst they are ‘looked after’ children and young people will have a plan for their care, a named Social Worker who makes sure the plan happens and regular reviews by an Independent Chair to oversee their care.
If young people stay in care until they are 16, they will then transfer to the 16+ Service and receive resources and support to enable them to find employment and accommodation and set up and manage their own home.
Whilst they are ‘looked after’ or a ‘care leaver’, children and young people are entitled to a range of support and practical resources including the Children’s Rights Service, Educational Services and Corporate Parenting Team.
These pages give you information on the complete range of support and services available to looked after children and care leavers.
