Adoption

Is it for you?

Could you change a child’s future? This is something you can do by becoming an adoptive parent. If you have ever thought of taking this big step, this information is for you.

It answers some of the key questions you may have:
  • can I adopt?
  • who needs adopting?
  • how do I go about it?
  • what support will I get?
Adopting is about making a real difference to a child’s life. When you adopt, you provide a secure, loving home to a child – for life!

Like all parenting, it means sticking with it through good times and bad. It is one of the most challenging, but also one of the most rewarding things you can do.
If you think adoption could be for you, read on to find out more.
If you decide to take the next step, please contact our adoption team to speak to an adoption worker on 0116 299 5899.

What is adoption?

Adoption is a lifelong commitment. It’s about providing a permanent family for a child or children in care who cannot, for whatever reason, return home.

When you adopt a child, you take on all the responsibilities and rights for the child that the birth parent had. It’s the stability and security of family life that makes it such a positive option for children.

Adoption Statement of Purpose and Function

This Statement of Purpose and Function explains the aims, objectives and services provided by the Adoption Team for the Children and Young People’s Services of Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Can I adopt?

If you can provide a permanent, stable and caring home, we welcome your interest. Remember that nearly everyone who completes the adoption process is recommended to adopt. The legal minimum age is 21 years. However, life experience is essential.

What sort of person do you have to be?

All sorts of people can make a success of adoption. It doesn’t matter whether you are married or single, in or out of work. Your race, religion, culture or sexuality will be accepted.
But you do need plenty of patience, humour, time and energy – children are demanding! Above all, you need to be determined to give a young person the sort of support that will really make a difference to their life.
