List of Ullesthorpe Subscription Windmill Shareholders
|
Date: 26th June 1838 Object
Details: Ullesthorpe Subscription Windmill was built in 1800 by local subscription – 29 villagers subscribed to 88 shares at approximately £10 each. Just over one third of the shares were owned by John Goodacre, a local landowner. When he died in 1831 he left two thirds of his shares to his eldest son John and the rest to Robert, who purchased his brother’s shares from him. Robert then set about acquiring all the other shares. This
document shows the names of shareholders being ticked off by Robert’s solicitor as he bought or ‘acquired’ the shares. Some names have RG 55 or 58 against them, one has ‘no claimant’ against it. Interestingly, six of the shareholders in 1838 were women,
that is, nearly 20%, either in their own right or perhaps by inheritance. The current owner is leasing the mill and its outbuildings back to the villagers of Ullesthorpe for 75 years. Object
