Museum Collections

Inspiration and Research Visits

The Museum collections can provide inspiration and information for people of all ages, especially for those who are working on their own research or creative project.
The collections, together with their supporting records, archives, libraries and the specialist knowledge of the curatorial team provide a wealth of information, inspiration and opportunities.
The collections are open to groups, students, businesses, media companies and individuals.
Examples of how the collections can be used include:
  • academic, private and local history research (including creative writing)
  • design inspiration for students and creative industries
  • photography
  • art
  • reminiscence
  • craft and needlework and textile projects
  • scientific research
  • object identification
Some of these inspirational projects have been exhibited, published and added to the collections.
Some groups have worked with the collections over a number of years. The Second Turning Textile group took inspiration from the Archaeology, historical Costume and Natural Life Collections to create new textile pieces. This work culminated in an exhibition at the Fashion Gallery at Snibston Discovery Museum in 2010.
