The King King Hunting Diaries

March 1900

Diary page for 2 March 1900
March 2nd.  The Queen’s at Ascot.  The deer uncarted down wind twisted about to such an extent that everyone lost hounds including myself.  I gave it up, but starting from Gravel Hill they pointed for Broadmoor then turned by Wishmoor X for Bagshot, thence by Sunninghill, Sunningdale & so on, the latter pack by themselves & close to their deer!  Wind East.

March 6th.  The Queen’s at Holtspur Heath.  Uncarted in the usual place but the master allowed the mob to drive the deer down wind.  Ran fairly over a beastly up and down country, leaving [Landwater] to the left towards Wykeham.  The deer waited in a big wood, then turned short back & up wind over the hills towards Penn.  Feeling bad and being behind as well, I gave up, & only then caught the 4-15.

Diary page for 31 March 1900
March 31st.  After a time in bed with bronchitis and nearly losing the number of my ----, Mr Garth at Wentworth.  Plenty of foxes, not over much scent, & as long as I stayed, the usual appearance of the huntsman ardently wishing to lose his fox, & cure his hounds of the silly habit of having their noses.  Only made half a day.

Lazarus Comart of it!
