Schools Programme
The schools programme is a project bringing presentations to Primary and Secondary schools .These presentations are led by serving magistrates in your local area, and there is no cost to the school.
The aim of the programme is to make pupils aware of justice in their local community, and can be delivered as part of the citizenship element of the PSHE curriculum. The presentation can be tailored to your needs, but would typically contain information about :
- Who can become a magistrate
- What kinds of cases they deal with
- How guilt or innocence is decided
- How a sentence is decided
The programme encourages pupils to :
- Participate in discussion and decision making
- Discuss key issues of right and wrong
- Identify the consequences of breaking the rules.
You class could also take part in a Mock Trial.
Just speak to your MIC contact when you are setting up the sessions to agree what you want.
Community Programme
Again, this programme has serving magistrates available during the day and evening to come and talk to your group absolutely free of charge. We will:
- Inform and entertain you about our work
- Explain who we are
- Explain how we became magistrates
- Answer any questions you may have about the magistracy and the courts
- Listen to your concerns on law and order
Invite us to talk to your group, and you will realize that we are all ordinary folk like you, with many and varied life experiences but proud of the job we do.
