Treasure Finds from Leicestershire

Leicestershire is lucky to boast some spectacular Treasure finds, some of which are detailed below.

The Hallaton Treasure

The South East Leicestershire Hoard
The Iron Age and Roman Treasure hoard includes more than 5,000 silver and gold coins, a unique silver gilt Roman helmet, jewellery and many other objects.
The site of the treasure proved to be an internationally important ritual site dating mostly to the generations before and after the Roman Conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD

Post Medieval Coin Hoard

Post Medieval Coin Hoard
Post Medieval coin hoard from Rutland.
It is thought that this hoard was buried for safe keeping during the turbulent times around the end of James II’s reign.
It contains coins from the reign of Elizabeth I to James II.

Rothley Bronze Age Axe Hoard

This hoard contains a very rare complete metal axe mould (left). The mould would have made a type of Axe known as a Welby, as the first example was found in that Leicestershire village. The hoard is now part of the Museums Collection.

Rare 'A' Bracteate' Mount

Rare ‘A’ Bracteate mount
Only six A bracteates are known in this country and this one is so far unique! It is the only bracteate to portray a drinking vessel. This object is now on display at Melton Museum

These are amongst the oldest metal objects produced in Western Europe and are the oldest metal work on our database!

These are quite common treasure finds and would have been part of a highly prized necklace.
