Being safe online is a key skill for anyone using the Internet. We want to be make the public aware of the potential risks of using the internet, e-mail and mobile phones, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, inappropriate contact through a social networking site and the mistaken downloading of disturbing images.
Children and Young people are using the web to do a wide variety of activities, but may not understand the risks, or behave in a way that is thoughtful of other users. The idea of Netiquette is one way to encourage online safety. Parents, teachers and carers can also take some simple actions. These include:
- Getting to know your children's online friends and taking an interest in what your child is doing online
- Discussing clear rules about sharing personal information, such as images and activities, with your child
- Ensuring that your child can talk to you when they feel uncomfortable about something they have seen online
