What is the Disabled Workers Group (DWG)?
  • We are a group of disabled employees from all departments at the County Council.
How do I know if I can be a member of the DWG?
  • If you think that you are disabled please come along!
  • We have members with a variety of impairments including; mental health problems, learning disabilities/difficulties, hearing impairments, visual impairment, wheel chair users, dyslexia etc.
  • We also have people attending who have an interest in, or a responsibility for disability. These include employees from HR, property, equalities etc. If you think that the work you do is related to the disability equality agenda please come along.
How often are meetings and when do they take place?
  • Meetings take place every 2 months, usually on a Wednesday.
  • They take place at County Hall and other venues in the County.
  • The Council fully supports attendance of the group. Please speak to your line manager if you wish to attend.
You can view the agendas, minutes and papers (link to be added) from previous meetings of the group here.
Why do we have a Disabled Workers Group?
  • We have a DWG to help empower disabled employees at the County Council and to promote self-development and independence.
  • We are responsible for shaping policy at the County Council relating to both employment and service delivery. For instance the group was involved in developing the Council’s Disability Equality Scheme
  • We also work toward the Council’s objective of promoting disability equality and ending discrimination.
  • View the group’s Terms of Reference
What else does the DWG do?
  • We provide a forum for networking and an opportunity for members to discuss any concerns/issues they may have relating to their disability. This takes place after the business of the meeting has concluded.
  • All discussions taking place in this forum remain confidential.
  • Every year in December we hold our Disabled Workers Group Conference. The Conference is being held this year on Monday 3rd December 2007 at Burleigh Court on the Loughborough University campus site. For more information please use the contact details at the foot of this page.
What kind of support is available at meetings?
  • We type what people are saying on a big screen. This is called ‘Talk to Type’.
  • Parking
  • Interpreters. For example, British Sign Language.
  • Loop system for those with hearing impairments
The Group is a meeting of disabled employees and people who are responsible for disability issues.
Celebrating Success Stories
In preparation of this year's conference we are looking for your input. What we would like is your stories celebrating success. These will form part of a display at this years conference, and may also be used on the new DWG page on the CIS. Stories do not necessarily need to be work related, although some would be appreciated. We also have some case studies of some of the authority's existing disabled employees ( found on this website) to help get you started.
There is an opportunity to submit your stories via an online form using the link below, or by writing to the DWG inbox dwg@leics.gov.uk. Please submit all entries by Friday 9th November.
We look forward to reading your stories, and to being able to present them at the conference. Happy writing!
