Traffic Counters
Leicestershire County Council currently has 262 permanent automatic traffic counters (ATCs) installed at strategic points across the whole county. The data collected from these sites is used to assess the long term growth or decline in traffic flows within Leicestershire, and to assess the impact of new schemes, developments and provide supporting evidence for before and after studies e.g. monitoring traffic flows through Earl Shilton after the opening of the new bypass.
The majority of our sites produce volumetric traffic flows only, however with recent developments in technology many of our sites now also measure vehicle speeds with some sites even classifying the type of vehicle e.g. Car, Light Goods, Heavy Goods etc.
