B582 Wigston : Blaby Road / Saffron Road / Countesthorpe Road

Road Junction Improvement

ROAD DIVERSION INFORMATION

Works on this scheme commenced on Monday 4th January 2010 and are expected to be completed in the week commencing Monday 26th April 2010.
The construction of the scheme will inevitably create significant disruption to those travelling along the B582 route through Wigston and local residents / businesses. Every effort will be made to reduce the impact by keeping the construction period to a minimum and advising the travelling public to avoid this route if at all possible

Scheme details

Background

As part of the planning condition for the new Tesco store off the B582 Blaby Road / Bennet Way, Wigston; Leicestershire County Council secured a sum of money from Tesco to make Highway improvements along the B582 corridor to mitigate against traffic associated with the new store. Part of this money is paying for this improvement scheme.

Scheme Objectives

  • Reduce traffic accidents
  • Provide pedestrian controlled facilities
  • Better control of traffic movements

The Proposals

  • Traffic Signal Control of all four arms of this staggered crossroad junction and Red/Green man pedestrian crossing across Countesthorpe Road; Saffron Road and B582 Blaby Road/ St Thomas Road at the Saffron Road junction.
  • Countesthorpe Road is to be widened to two lanes making use of land purchased from Oadby and Wigston Borough Council.
  • Whilst the works are being undertaken, the opportunity to resurface the whole of the carriageway will be taken. Also to renew the existing Pelican crossing equipment on Countesthorpe Road which is near the end of its reliable life span.
