Melton Road

Proposed Cycling and Walking Improvements

Picture of Melton Road

Background

Roundhill Community College has concerns over their students using the narrow section of footway between Fosse Way and the school entrance.  This is made worse by the speed of traffic using Melton Road.  Requests have been made for speed reducing measures along Melton Road between Fosse Way and the ASDA roundabout,  and traffic surveys have found vehicle speeds to be excessive.  Furthermore Roundhill College has been identified for the implementation of an advisory 20mph school safety zone.  The opportunity has been taken to look at the site with a view to implementing a package of measures to address these concerns.

The Proposals

The proposals, which are aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and promoting cycling and walking along Melton Road, consist of:
  • A shared use footway/cycle track along the eastern side of Melton Road between Fosse Way and the A607 Newark Road/Melton Road/Barkby Thorpe Lane roundabout.
  • A Toucan crossing near the entrance of Berrystead nursing home allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.
  • An advisory 20mph school safety zone with flashing amber lights.
  • Two Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS), each displaying an alternating school warning triangle and 20mph speed limit roundel at school start and finish times, and a 30mph speed limit roundel at all other times.
  • Removal of the hatched centreline markings and provision of an on-carriageway cycle lane on the western side.
  • Improvements to the existing shared use footway/cycle track on the western side of Melton Road between the A607 Newark Road/Melton Road/Barkby Thorpe Lane roundabout and Britannia Way.
  • Improvements to existing crossing points by providing flush kerbs and tactile paving.

Scheme Objectives

  • Encourage active and sustainable travel.
  • Improve connectivity and accessibility.
