Latest Update - October 2010
On 27th July 2010 the County Council Cabinet approved a report recommending a revised capital budget for the financial year 2011//12. This means this scheme cannot proceed within the current financial year. To view the Cabinet report click here.(pdf format, file size 102kb)
This scheme is being promoted jointly by the City and County council's and both authorities will now have to re-evaluate the schemes future timetable.
Background
The A426 is a key route into Leicester City. Traffic flow at peak times on this route is often congested and buses can get caught up in the delays, making bus services unreliable at the times when reliability is most important ie; when people are commuting. As a result, measures to improve facilities for buses along the A426 are now been considered.
Traffic Surveys have been undertaken to highlight the main issues, and this information is being used to help develop a suitable solution

Scheme Objectives
- To develop proposals intended to reduce delays to bus services
- Improve the reliability of the bus service
- Encourage more travel by bus on the A426 route
The Proposals
Outline proposals for the A426 between Park Hill Drive and the Blaby bypass roundabout have been drafted and these include new bus lanes in addition to the existing road layout along key sections of this route. Whilst these proposals are being developed, opportunities to improve facilities for vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists) are also being considered. The proposals also include improved pedestrian crossing facilities at the Soar Valley Way junction, and a new cycle lane between Park Hill Drive and Granby Road.
The bus lanes themselves will also improve this route for cyclists in addition to the existing off road cycle route along the Great Central Way. The intention is that no private land will be taken to construct any of these proposals. Consequently in order to fit bus lanes within existing highway boundaries, some footways will become narrower. These locations are identified on the plans.
