Narborough Road South Environmental Improvements

Narborough Road South is a busy dual carriageway running through the Braunstone Town area of Leicestershire. It is one of the busiest routes into Leicester City Centre and one of the main arteries from the south of the county.
Running each side of the main carriageway there are two two-way service roads, originally separated by a narrow verge area and a metal mesh fence.
The old fence performed an important safety role by separating pedestrians and vehicles using the service road from fast moving through traffic on the dual carriageway. Whilst still functional, the old fence was rusting and unsightly.
The new-style fence, complete with a decorative steel wave on top, enhances the local environment along one of the busiest routes in to Leicester.
The environmental improvements also include new spaces along the roadside that have been landscaped with a variety of trees and shrubs, to bring seasonal colour.

The Scheme

Over the past few years Leicestershire County Council have negotiated financial contributions towards improving the road network from developers of new commercial buildings in the Meridian and Fosse Park areas.
A total of £1.5m of this money was allocated for environmental improvements on the highway within the residential area adjacent to and along Narborough Road South.
Construction work started in July 2010, and finished in November 2010. Landscaping work took place during December 2010 and January 2011. All the Environmental improvements were completed on programme and on budget.

The other part of these works created areas on the service roads that have now been planted with trees and shrubs.
