October 2007 - Bypass construction well underway
Following on from the official start of works in September, construction of the Earl Shilton Bypass is now well underway.
As with any major works there will inevitably be some unavoidable disruption during construction, particularly where the bypass joins existing roads. This webpage will keep you up-to-date with the main activities on site and outline how this could affect you.
At present the following restrictions are in place;
- 30 mph temporary speed limit on the A47 Leicester Road northeast of Earl Shilton to allow construction of the bypass northern roundabout.
- Closure of Station Road (Earl Shilton) where it meets Wilkinson Lane to divert existing water mains and install highway drainage pipe work. A route through the closure will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists. Vehicles travelling into Earl Shilton and on towards Leicester are diverted an extra 0.5 mile via Elmesthorpe Lane and the A47.
Other works currently underway are;
- site clearance and boundary fencing is nearing completion
- laying of a drainage ‘rock blanket’ on which the new road will be constructed on its approach to the bypass northern roundabout (click for photo)
- laying of deep drainage pipes as part of the Station Road Pumping Station diversion (click for photo)
- various statutory undertakers’ diversions, including a large gas main and high voltage electricity cables
- topsoil strip and watercourse diversion at the bypass southern roundabout (click for photo)
- archaeological recording works that are well advanced and should be completed by the end of November.(click for the University of Leicester Archaeological Services)
