Press release: Curbing Congestion during bypass work (December 2007)

Utility companies and the County Council are working together to curb disruption and congestion during the building of the Earl Shilton bypass. Crucial gas, water, electrical, telecommunication and road work needed on Elmesthorpe Lane will all be carried out at the same time in the New Year, to keep disruption to a minimum. To enable this to take place, Elmesthorpe Lane will be closed for around three months from early January. full press release
The bypass works are into their fourth month and are progressing well.  As with any major works there will inevitably be some unavoidable disruption during construction, particularly where the new bypass joins the existing road network.  Though this disruption may be inconvenient, it is essential for both safety reasons and to allow construction of the new road.  This section of the webpage is intended keep you informed of the main activities on site and to outline the main effects of the bypass work.
At present the following traffic restrictions are in place:
  • 30 mph temporary speed limit at the north and south site accesses, to protect both the public and site staff at these accesses.  These speed limits are mandatory.
  • Thurlaston Lane has been re-aligned on a temporary road diversion to allow construction of a new bridge over the bypass.  (photo)
  • Various statutory undertakers’ diversions (gas / electricity water etc.) will continue for the next few months, and traffic light control will be required from time to time for both public and site staff safety
Other current activities on-site are:
  • Excavation for Thurlaston Lane Bridge has commenced. Piling work (for the new bridge foundations) will start either late December or early January.
  • Construction of the Thurlason Brook Culvert is progressing well. This culvert will carry Thurlaston Brook, diverted approximately 25 metres south of its existing course, under the bypass.  (photo)
  • Archaeological recording works should be complete by late December.
From early January 2008 Elmesthorpe Lane will be closed for approximately 3 months. This will allow Elmesthorpe Lane between Wilkinson Lane and the bypass to be re-aligned and improved as planned. Vehicular traffic will be diverted via Wilkinson Lane, Station Road (Earl Shilton) and the A47. A route for non-vehicular traffic will be maintained through the works.
