Road Safety Measures

Gallery Part Four

Contents: Rumble Strips, Sign Entry Treatments, Sheltered Parking, Speed Cushions
PHOTO DESCRIPTION
Picture of Rumble Strips
Rumble Strips ( small bumps to cause vibration)

These normally take the form of a series of slightly raised strips of different coloured surfacing set across the width of the road. The appearance and feel of the strips is intended to cause drivers to reduce their speed, however, due to the resultant road noise rumble strips are not normally laid within 200 metres of residential properties.
The locations where rumble strips can be effectively used are limited, therefore typically used at rural accident reduction sites to encourage drivers to reduce speeds
Cost (£)
A series of rumble strips typically costs around £3,000.
Picture of a Gateway Sign Treatment
Sign Entry Treatments (Gateway treatments)

Usually used on the approaches to built up areas where the speed limit signs and town/village nameplates are incorporated to give maximum impact to approaching drivers. Usually consist of signing and lining but can be combined with build outs and refuges. Used on entries to built up areas to raise awareness of the approaching speed limit change.
Cost (£)Typically between £2,000 and £5,000 per entry, dependant on extent of works.
Picture of Sheltered Parking
Sheltered Parking

The Introduction of footway or verge build-outs at the end of existing sections of on–street parking. The parking is defined by a white line or change in carriageway surface.
Whilst visually narrowing the appearance of the road, sheltered parking offers a degree of protection to parked vehicles. The build-outs can provide safer points for pedestrians to cross.
Cost (£)
Typical costs are around £10,000.
Picture of Speed Cushions
Speed Cushions
Similar to speed tables but take the form of small plateauxs with a gap inbetween them.Typically introduced in pairs along a route as part of a traffic calming scheme to reduce vehicle speeds.speed cushions reduce the speed of the vast majority of traffic.
Whilst not as effective as a speed table, speed cushions allow wider vehicles to straddle them making it easier for buses and emergency vehicles to pass along a route.
Cushions need to be located within regular intervals in order to reduce speeds consistently over a route.. Cushions are typically around 1.6m wide and costs can increase if carriageway width has to be adjusted to accommodate them.
Cost (£)
A set of 2 cushions would be approximately £3,500 .without carriageway adjustment plus legal costs and advertising costs around £5,000 . implementation usually takes around 10-12 months due to the legal requirements.
