Road Safety Measures

Gallery Part Two

Contents: Dropped Kerbs, Footway Buildouts, Mini-Roundabout
PHOTO DESCRIPTION
Picture of a Dropped Kerb
Dropped Kerbs
Lower height kerbs can be used to create vehicle access points at private drives or  provide easier movement for pedestrians, wheelchair and buggy users who are crossing the road to and from the footway.
Cost (£)
Around £1,500 for a set of 2 sections of dropped kerbs opposite one another.
Picture of a Footway Build Out
Footway Build-outs
widening of the footway into the carriageway to provide a better view point for pedestrians wanting to cross the road. Particularly beneficial near parked cars (see sheltered parking) but can also be used as part of a chicane system (see chicanes and priority narrowing).
Buildouts can be difficult to achieve where there are many private driveways restricting their positioning.
Not necessarily a speed reducing technique when used in isolation but "narrowing" can encourage some drivers to reduce speeds. Typically used in combination with other measures ie gateway treatments.
Cost (£)
Build-outs are normally furnished with bollards and tactile paving. Costs range between £500.00 and £10,000
Picture of Mini Roundabout
Roundabouts
Roundabouts have a raised central area and require a lot of land. Land acquisition, suitablility of existing road layout together with design work and consultation means that  a roundabout can take up to 18 months to implement.
Mini-Roundabouts
Mini roundabouts are usually created with road markings and minor kerbline alterations. Typically, used as a traffic management tool to control traffic, reduce congestion or accidents.  Mini-roundabouts can also provide an effective speed reducing device used as part of a package of speed reducing measures.
Mini-roundabouts are less effective where there is little minor road traffic to cause the major route drivers to give way. They are generally more effective where refuges are incorporated to regulate driver approach speeds and behaviour. A mini roundabouts should not be used as traffic calming if approach speeds are excessive, traffic calming should be used on the approaches.
Cost (£)
A mini-roundabout  without refuges  including signing, carriageway resurfacing and road markings could cost as little as £10,000. However,a mini island for £10,000 is likely to be substandard as far as TD54/07 is concerned. A more comprehensive estimate would be in the region of £30,000 upwards, allowing for underground services and ulitilies repositioning. Road widening may also be required. Mini-roundabouts are usually more effective when introduced with other traffic calming measures. Mini islands should not be used as traffic calming if the approach speeds are excessive, other forms of traffic calming must be used on the approach.
