Whetstone, Bus Route 84 - Bus Stop ImprovementsLatest Update April 2009The consultation period for the proposals has now ended. The outcomes will be reported in June 2009 to the local County Council Members, and subsequently to the Lead Member for the Environment and Transport Department, for a decision on how the scheme is to proceed.
BackgroundIn line with our Local Transport Plan policies to increase travel by public transport, and at the request of the bus operator, we are proposing to convert the existing 'hail and ride' system currently operating in Whetstone on bus route 84 to a system of fixed bus stops.
The proposal forms part of the County Council’s Local Transport Plan objective to improve congestion by making bus travel more attractive through improvements to the reliability and punctuality of the bus service; the bus company has previously requested the conversion of this part of the route to a fixed stop system, as such bus stops provide greater clarity for boarding and alighting, agreed safer stopping locations and certain permanent physical improvements for bus users.
The bus stop details were finalised at a meeting on site between County Council officers, the local County Council Member, the bus operator, the Police and a representative of the Parish Council. Consideration having been given to road safety, the effects on nearby properties and the needs of bus passengers, the above improvements are considered appropriate. It is intended to implement the scheme in 2009.
The ProposalsThe bus stops will consist of a bus stop flag attached either to a new pole or an existing lamp column. No bus shelters are proposed. Raised kerbs at bus stops are normally provided to improve access for wheelchair and pushchair users, although provision of these cannot be confirmed until the access for buses has been ensured. Modifications to the line of the kerb may also be needed in some cases. The extent of kerb changes will be determined during the detailed design of the stops.
