Markfield, A50/A511/M1 Junction 22Proposed Visibility Restriction BarrierThe History of scheme is shown below. It is for information only as the scheme is complete.Latest update October 2008This scheme was substantially completed in April 2008. Post scheme monitoring has now commenced. BackgroundThe County Council has identified measures to improve safety at this busy road junction. The roundabout at this location has experienced 23 shunt type accidents (cars going into the back of one another) in the last 5 years, caused by vehicles approaching the roundabout too quickly.
Accident investigators think this is partly due to the open view of the roundabout. Drivers are tempted to divert attention from the vehicle in front to traffic circulating the roundabout, in turn leading to them to approach the junction too fast.
Although this is a particularly busy road junction the grass verges are home to a variety of wildlife and greenery and is within the National Forest and Charnwood Forest Landscape Character Area.
