Moira, Ashby Road/Measham Road (Toll Gate) JunctionLocal Safety Scheme - New Double Mini RoundaboutLatest Update February 2008BackgroundThe County Council's Accident Investigation and Prevention Unit carried out a study of injury accident history at this junction and concluded that many of the reported incidents occurred as a result of drivers on the minor road approaches misjudging speeds of vehicles on the present Ashby Road/Shortheath Road through route.Scheme DetailsA double mini roundabout was considered the most appropriate design as all vehicles will have to slow on approach and this should reduce the likelihood of previous accident patterns being repeated. Also, the requisite road layout can be accommodated within the existing staggered pattern of highway boundaries.
The photographs below show the junction as it appears now, and an artist's impression of how the junction will look once the double mini roundabout has been constructed.
Pedestrian facilities will be improved through wider central refuges on the Rawdon Road and Measham Road approaches.
To encourage correct vehicle alignments, the central domes of each roundabout are to be profiled to a maximum height of 125mm.
Some alterations to the lighting layout on the Measham Road/Ashby Road corner will also be required.
