Melton Mowbray Proposed Norman Way Junction Improvements

News

Proposed junction improvement at Norman Way / Thorpe End to start soon.

Scheme History

Background

The A606 (Nottingham to Oakham), A607 (Leicester to Grantham) and A6006 Asfordby Road, are important County roads that carry high traffic volumes. These roads meet in Melton Mowbray town centre, on Norman Way.  As a result, Norman Way suffers from heavy congestion with long delays for vehicle travellers.
Leicestershire County Council carried out a major public consultation exercise in March 2005 on traffic issues in Melton Mowbray. The majority of respondents indicated that a number of junction improvements were required on Norman Way, together with a bypass/ring road around Melton Mowbray. As a result, a programme of improvements to the three key town centre junctions along Norman Way at Wilton Road, Scalford Road and Thorpe End have been included in the Leicestershire Local Transport Plan over the next 5 years (2006 to 2011) together with plans for a longer term bypass for the town.

The Scheme

The junction improvements along Norman Way are being undertaken in two phases.
The first phase of works at the Scalford Road and Nottingham Road junctions are now complete.
Phase 1 improvements at the Wilton Road and Scalford Road junctions include:
  • Additional traffic lanes on Wilton Road and Asfordby Road to improve capacity.
  • Alterations to the traffic signal phasing to make both junctions operate more effectively and efficiently for the main traffic movements.
  • New pedestrian traffic signalled crossings and refuges with facilities for the visually and mobility impaired
The Phase 1 improvements are shown on the plan below:

The second phase of works at the Thorpe End junction are expected to start Summer 2008 and be completed Autumn 2008.
Phase 2 improvements at the Thorpe End junction include:
  • Carriageway widening and re-lining to create additional traffic lanes on Norman Way and Thorpe Road to improve capacity.
  • Parking restrictions on Thorpe Road to deter on-street parking near to the junction - required on safety grounds and to gain the maximum traffic capacity benefits from the junction improvements.
  • Alterations to the junction's traffic signal phasing to make it operate more effectively and efficiently.
  • The introduction of all round pedestrian crossing facilities.
  • The introduction of facilities to promote cycling.
Another overall objective of the scheme will be to reduce street clutter where appropriate.
The Phase 2 improvements are shown on the plan below:
