Proposed Bus Stop Improvements
and Road Safety Scheme

Broom Leys Road, Coalville

Latest Update February 2008

Background

Regular bus services pass the Hospital but do not stop particularly close to it.  Due to parking congestion within the Hospital car park it is not possible for buses to stop within these grounds.
New bus stop facilities on the nearby roads would make it easier for people to get to the Hospital and funding has been made available to make this possible.
Whilst the money available is primarily aimed at improving public transport access it is also true that roads in the vicinity of the School and Hospital do experience considerable pedestrian activity and traffic volumes are quite high.  Also, several traffic accidents have occurred in the vicinity over recent years.
Within the budget available the opportunity is being taken to promote various other measures which will improve road safety near to the School and Hospital.

Scheme Objectives

The objectives of the scheme are:
  • To make it easier for people to visit the Hospital by bus
  • To reduce vehicle speeds thereby reducing the potential for vehicle conflict and creating a safer environment for pedestrians
  • To make it safer for people crossing the road

The Proposals

A scheme has now been proposed which is aimed at achieving the above objectives.  The main elements being proposed are:
  • New bus stops and laybys nearer to the Hospital and Surgery
  • Speed tables and speed cushions
  • Zebra crossings
  • 20mph speed limit

Public Consultation

A public exhibition was held at Broom Leys County Primary School on Thursday 18th January 2007, at which County Council Officers were on hand to discuss scheme details and answer queries from residents.  All comments received were collated and considered by County Council Members.

Latest News

The scheme was approved on the 19th June 2007 and works started in the Autumn of 2007.  The majority of the measures are now in operation, however, it has been decided to postpone construction of part of the scheme until the 2008 school summer holidays.

What happens next?

The proposed layby works on Greenhill Road will be constructed during the 2008 school summer holidays.  Full monitoring of the scheme will be carried out when fully complete, when the overall effect will be more evident.  However, the scheme introduced so far seems to be working well.
