What is an advisory 20mph zone and how will it affect the public

Children walking to school cross many busy roads in order to get to school.  The aim of an advisory 20mph zone is to encourage car users to slow their speed and make  drivers more aware of the presence of children at school opening and closing times.
Signs with flashing ambers are positioned at the start and finish of the zones. The  lights are programmed to flash at school opening and closing times
On the approaches to the zone, you may see a  20mph warning of the zone ahead. Some indicate the distance to the zone others merely inform the public of the presence of a zone ahead. When entering the zone, flashing ambers indicate that the 20mph speed limit should be observed.

Other traffic calming features

Sometimes the signs are part of a larger scheme. Where this occurs, there may be other features such as pedestrian crossing points with tactile paving or a joint cycleway / footway to the school. Along the length of the zone you may find repeater signs and in some areas footway markers are present to indicate to children the route to their school.
