Proposed Advisory School 20mph Zones The advisory
20mph zone is part of the Leicestershire County Councils Safer routes to school programme . The aim
is to make roads around the school entrances safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists.The
following schools are included in the 2006-2007 programmeAppleby Magna - Sir John
Moore Church of England School.Billesdon - Parochial Primary School Bottesford C of E Primary School Burbage - Sketchley Hill Primary School Glen Parva - Glen Hills Primary School Measham - St. Charles RC Primary School Measham - Measham CE Primary School Moira - Moira County Primary School Wigston Magna - The Meadows County Primary School Packington - Packington Church of England Primary School Shepshed - Newcroft Primary School Thrussington - Thrussington Church of England Primary School Whitwick - St John the Baptist C of E Primary School What
is an advisory 20mph zone and how will it affect the publicChildren walking to
school cross many busy roads in order to get to school. The aim of an advisory 20mph zone is to
encourage car users to slow their speed and make drivers more aware of the presence of children
at school opening and closing times.Signs with flashing ambers are positioned at the start and finish of the zones.
The lights are programmed to flash at school opening and closing times
On the approaches to the zone, you may see a 20mph warning of the zone ahead. Some indicate the distance to the zone others merely inform the public of the presence of a zone ahead. When entering the zone, flashing ambers indicate that the 20mph speed limit should be observed. Other
traffic calming featuresSometimes the signs are part of a larger scheme. Where
this occurs, there may be other features such as pedestrian crossing points with tactile paving or a
joint cycleway / footway to the school. Along the length of the zone you may find repeater signs and
in some areas footway markers are present to indicate to children the route to their school.The
