Latest Update March 2006

Construction work has started and is expected to continue until May. Some road closures will be necessary to complete the work safely, but at such times diversion signing will be in place to give access to premises on the route.

Latest Update October 2005

All comments received from the public consultation have been carefully considered by the local County Councillor and lead member for Highways and the scheme has now been approved for construction. Further news on the development of this scheme will follow shortly.

Background

Following an in depth accident study along Gartree Road, a casualty reduction scheme is now proposed. There have been several reported personal injury accidents at the junctions of Shady Lane, Stoughton Road and Gaulby Lane in recent years. Consequently, the proposed scheme has been designed to address the dominant accident types and draw attention to potential hazards on the route.

The Proposals

The scheme includes:
  • A mini-roundabout at the junction of Gartree Road and
Stoughton Road, with high friction surfacing and improved
    street lighting.
  • High friction surfacing on the approaches to the Shady Lane Junction.
  • Improved road signs and markings throughout.
  • A reduction of the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph and 50mph

Scheme Objectives

  • To reduce traffic accidents
  • Encourage more appropriate vehicle speeds
  • Increase awareness of potential hazards.

Consultation

Consultation was undertaken with frontagers of the proposed scheme last year, along with formal consultees such as the emergency services and local County Councillors., In addition, legal notices advertising the speed limit proposals were placed on site in June / July 2005 for 3 weeks, no objections to the scheme were received. The outcome of these consultations was the subject of a report to the local County Councillor and lead member for Highways, who after careful consideration of all issues raised approved the scheme for construction.

What Happens Next ?

Construction of the scheme is anticipated to start next financial year and the proposed start date and duration of the works will be posted on the website when known.
