Traffic Signal Improvement Scheme

*Latest News* December 2005

The Scheme was substantially completed on the 27th November 2005. Thanks to the residents of Narborough Road South, Braunstone Lane and Braunstone Lane East for being patient during the construction period of the works. Post scheme monitoring will now commence.
September 2005
The Scheme received approval in June 2005 following consultation, the orginally proposed 'one-way' entrance into the West service road was omitted from the scheme design.
August 2005
The main phase of construction started in August 2005 and work progressed well.

Scheme Objectives

  • To improve the traffic accident record at this junction
  • To provide safer crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and improve accessibility through the junction

The Proposals

To provide the layout and operation of the traffic signal at the junction and to improve controlled facilities for pedestrians and cyclists across each arm of the junction.
This will require:
  • Seperately signalled right turns for the side road traffic
  • Advanced traffic signal arrangement for the City bound west service road traffic to enter Narborough Road South
  • The introduction of a one way entrance into the west service road
  • Modification of a section of existing Narborough Road South speed limit to 40mph through Traffic Regulation Order process

Site Data

There have been 59 road traffic accidents at this junction over the past five years.
Right turning vehicles have been a contributory factor to many accidents. Consequently the introduction of this proposed scheme should lead to a reduction in the number and severity of accidents by separately signalling their right turn manoeuvres.

Scheme Details

  • Making part of the service road one- way from the junction towards The Crossway.
  • Stopping parking on part of the service road between The Crossway and Braunstone Lane.
  • Banning ‘U’ turns at the proposed signals at Braunstone Lane and Braunstone Lane East.
  • Directing drivers when in the ahead lane to only drive ahead from Braunstone Lane and from Braunstone Lane East.
  • Extending the 40mph speed limit on Narborough Road South to maintain current “buffer” zone to the first city bound stop line.
  • Allowing cycling as well as pedestrians on pavements around the junction.
  • Providing a bus lane for City bound services across the junction.

Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO’s)

Traffic Regulation Orders will be put in place in order to provide the much-needed safer routes for pedestrians to cross roads at this busy junction, and provide separately signalled right turn lanes for the side road traffic.
For safety and operational reasons it would be necessary to restrict use of part of the west service road and ban some turns within the junction.

Construction Programme

Subject to scheme approval the works are anticipated to commence in April / May 2005 with a construction period of 6-7 months.
During the construction works, traffic management will be in place including various lane closures, and some delays are expected. Two lanes will remain open along Narborough Road during the morning and evening peak periods and at other times when possible.

What Next?

A public exhibition of the proposals was held at the Braunstone and District Working Mens Club, Narborough Road on the 16th February 2005.
The exhibition was very well attended. We estimate that 200 people may have passed through the doors.
The formal consultation period ended on Friday 25th February 2005.
