Proposed 7.5 Tonnes Gross Weight Restriction (Except For Loading), Various Roads, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire And Nottinghamshire

Lorry at road junction
For many years concern has been expressed by County Councillor J B Rhodes, Bottesford Parish Council and residents of all three counties with regard to the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling through Bottesford, Long Bennington, Normanton and other local villages. These concerns primarily relate to vehicles servicing the industrial site at Normanton Airfield and using village roads as a through route between the A1 and A52. As a result a scheme has been designed as outlined in this webpage to help alleviate the problem. We would now like to find out the views of the public on our proposals before any decision is taken whether to proceed.

WHAT THE SCHEME INVOLVES:

It is proposed to introduce a 7.5 tonnes gross weight restriction, please see our map in PDF format, (file size 2, 144kb). The scheme will prohibit heavy goods vehicles (either loaded or unloaded) from using roads through Bottesford and Normanton as a through route to and from the A1/A52 and to the Normanton Airfield Industrial Estate. Villages in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire will also be protected from through movements. Whilst Long Bennington will not see total protection there will be a significant reduction in the flow of heavy goods vehicles through the village.
Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will of course still be able to enter the restricted roads for loading, unloading, garaging etc.

BENEFITS OF THE SCHEME:

  • Large reduction in the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling through Bottesford, Normanton and surrounding villages.
  • Reduction in noise and vibration
  • Improved village environment
  • Improvement in road safety

WHAT NEXT?:

The three County Councils have proposed this scheme which should help alleviate the problem.
A public exhibition was held at the Fuller Room, Old Primary School, Grantham Road, Bottesford on 1st February 2005. The exhibition was very well attended, with approximately 150 people attending.
Public notices advertising the proposed weight restriction were posted on site at the time of the exhibition.

* UPDATE MAY 2006 *

The weight restrictions are now in force. Violations of the restriction should be reported to Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 2222222 or alternatively weight.restricted@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk
