Measures to reduce the impact of traffic

Background
Barkby and Barkby Thorpe have for some time been suffering from traffic passing through the villages as an alternative to using the A607 and Leicester Ring Road. When congestion occurs on the major routes large volumes of vehicles travelling through Barkby and Barkby Thorpe create particular problems but it also appears that an increasing number of drivers are habitually using the village route alternatives. The Parish Council requested that the County Council formulate measures to help alleviate the situation.
The Works
The scheme consisted of:
The installation of
- Priority narrowing features on the Barkby and Barkby Thorpe north/south routes (Queniborough Road, Queen Street and King Street)
- Associated speed cushions
- New street lighting, road signing and marking
In addition
- Each narrowing feature incorporates a "bypass" route for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
- Existing 30mph speed limits have been extended to incorporate the features to be installed

Public Exhibition
A public exhibition was held at Barkby Village Hall, Beeby Road, Barkby on Saturday 3rd March 2007 between 1:30pm and 5:30pm. The exhibition was well attended by local residents.
The County Council invited comments on the proposals. The views contained in the responses were compiled into a report which was submitted to County Councillors. The majority of responses were in favour of the proposals and approval was given for the proposals to be implemented.
